Vacuum pumps are made of hard metal parts. These parts need to bolt together tightly. But even perfectly flat metal surfaces can have tiny, invisible gaps.
This is where the ring gasket comes in.
It is a simple ring made of soft, malleable copper. You place it between two metal surfaces before you bolt them together.
When you tighten the bolts, the copper gasket gets compressed. It squashes down to fill every tiny gap and imperfection. This creates a tight, secure seal.
