The ballast piston is the moving part inside the gas ballast valve. When you turn the gas ballast knob, the piston moves. It opens the valve to let air in. When you turn the knob back, the piston moves again. It closes the valve to stop the air flow.
The piston creates a seal against the valve seat. That seal is very important. If the piston does not seal properly, air will leak into your pump all the time. That will hurt your vacuum.
