This baffle strainer is installed where the air enters the pump. It’s like a very fine screen on a window. As air is sucked in, the strainer catches the solid particles. Only clean air can pass through to the inside of the pump. Without this filter, all that grit would go straight into the pump’s heart. It would act like sandpaper on the vanes, cylinders, and bearings. This causes wear, reduces power, and leads to breakdowns. Replacing this affordable strainer is much cheaper than fixing the damage it prevents.
