A shaft seal does a simple but vital job. It seals the gap where a rotating shaft passes through the pump housing. The shaft spins at high speed. Oil, air, and other fluids want to escape through that gap. The shaft seal stops them.
Without a good shaft seal, your pump will leak. You will lose vacuum. You might even suck dirt into the pump. None of that is good.
