A Woodruff key is shaped like a half-moon or a half-disc. It fits into a curved slot (called a keyway) cut into the shaft. The top part of the key sticks up above the shaft. That top part fits into a matching slot inside the gear or cam. When you slide the gear onto the shaft, the key locks the two together. Now, when the shaft spins, the gear spins with it.
Kinney rotary piston pumps use cams mounted on a common shaft to drive the pistons . These cams are held in place with keys. Without these keys, the cams would slip, and the pump would not work.
