The plug screws into the pump. The filter element extends down into the oil reservoir. As the pump circulates oil, the filter traps dirt and debris. Clean oil goes back to the moving parts

PLUG WITH FILTER

PLUG WITH FILTER
The filter element inside the plug gets dirty over time. It traps tiny particles of metal, carbon, and other contaminants. Once it is full, it cannot trap any more. Dirty oil then flows past the filter and damages your pump.
Here is what happens if you ignore the filter:
More wear: Abrasive particles scratch cylinder walls and bearings.
Poor performance: The pump cannot reach its ultimate vacuum level.
Higher temperature: Dirty oil does not cool as well.
Complete failure: Eventually, the pump seizes or loses all compression.
