A valve pad is a small rubber cushion. It is also called a valve foot or valve seat cushion.
It sits under the pump’s exhaust or inlet valve. Its job is to give the valve a soft place to land. When the valve opens and closes, it hits this pad. The pad absorbs the shock.
Without a good pad, the valve would hit hard metal. That would be very loud. It would also wear out the valve very fast.
