The rotor spins inside the pump cylinder. The vanes slide in and out of the rotor slots. They press against the cylinder wall. As the rotor turns, the vanes trap gas between themselves and the cylinder wall. Then they push that gas toward the exhaust.
A close seal is maintained against the wall of the pumping chamber by the vanes. This prevents fluid from leaking back across the pump . Without good vanes, your pump cannot create a strong vacuum.
