Think of it as a two-step cleaning system .

Step 1 – Catching the oil. The exhaust gas enters the filter and passes through a special glass fiber element . This element acts like a very fine net. It catches tiny oil droplets. The oil then drips down and collects in the bottom of the filter. You can see how full it is through the semi-transparent white bottom half of the filter body . When it gets full, you just open the drain plug.

Step 2 – Killing the smell. After the air passes through the oil filter, it goes through an activated carbon odor element . This absorbs any remaining oil vapor and odors. So the air that finally leaves the filter is clean and smells like nothing .
