A shaft seal sits where the spinning shaft goes into the pump body. It keeps things sealed.
In a dry pump like the iL70, the seal does a special job. The pumping chamber has no oil. But the bearings and gears still need lubrication. The shaft seal keeps the lubricating oil separate from the clean pumping chamber.
If this seal fails, oil can get into the pumping chamber. That ruins the “dry” part of your dry pump. It can also let process gases leak out.
