This is the Shaft Seal for the Gear Cover. It is a radial lip seal designed specifically for the EDP250. It fits onto the rotating shaft where it passes through the gearbox housing . Its only job is to keep the gearbox oil inside the pump and stop it from leaking out onto the floor.

The Edwards DP250 is a “three-stage claw” dry vacuum pump . Inside, there is a gearbox filled with oil. This oil lubricates the timing gears and bearings that keep the rotors synchronized . The gears are enclosed by a metal cover (the “Gear Cover”).
A shaft passes through this cover to drive the rotors. Where the shaft comes through the cover, there is a gap. If that gap is not sealed, oil will spray out.
This part closes that gap. It is a “lip seal” . It is a rubber ring with a spring inside. The rubber fits tightly around the spinning shaft. The spring keeps the rubber pressed against the shaft. The oil stays in the gearbox, and dirt stays out.
