This is an OEM replacement Gas Ballast Compression Spring for Edwards XDS and nXDS series dry scroll vacuum pumps. This small spring fits inside the gas ballast control assembly . It pushes the control knob outward. It also ensures the gas ballast valve seals properly when closed. This is a common wear part. It is included in many Edwards exhaust and ballast valve kits .

The gas ballast on your XDS or nXDS pump is a great feature. It lets you pump water vapor without ruining the oil (on oil-sealed pumps). On dry pumps, it helps purge condensable vapors.
But the gas ballast control has a small part inside. A compression spring. If that spring gets weak, the control feels floppy. The valve may not seal. You lose vacuum .
