Some people call it the “D-seal” because of its shape . It is a rubber ring that goes between the two halves of the filter body.
This seal does one simple job. It creates a tight seal between the top and bottom parts of the filter. Without a good seal, oil will leak out from the middle of the filter. You will see oil dripping down the outside. It makes a mess. It wastes expensive oil. It lets dirty air into your pump.
